Raised in Church

I learned a lot of things being raised in church my whole life. A lot of those things were good. But there were many things I learned from pastors and teachers that I later discovered just weren't in the Scriptures at all. Some things were the result of someone misunderstanding Scripture, some things were the result of lifting verses out of their intended context, and some things just flat out had no Scriptural basis at all.

Sometimes it frustrates me, but mostly it just challenges me to examine everything and subject it to the Spirit, which God gave to each of us as believers to "guide us into all truth."

Has this happened to you? What are some of those things that you have discovered?

This is the first time that I have been to Brandon's blog and I find the question, "What are some of the things you have discovered?"

That is surely an open invitation BUT perhaps there should be a heresy warning. I've been outside the walls of traditional Christianity for some 40 years - it's been a life time of asking questions.

For me there is an enormous difference between the Christian RELIGION and the Christian FAITH.

What is the FOUNDATION of the Christian FAITH and how do we get rid of some of the baggage of RELIGION?

I have a bit of a reputation of asking the awkward questions to which there are no easy answers.

The story begins on my blog

Similar for me. Though I don't get hung up on the fact that something is not in scripture, what bothers me is our practices and beliefs that are contrary to scripture. Just doesn't make any sense.

Yeah Johnny, I think that's the bigger thing for me too; the things that are contrary to Scripture.
